This person is serious… *facepalm*
They also raise a pretty goddamn good point. How many times in TOS did you see crewmembers pleading to be allowed to do stuff? A show in the 60’s is more damned progressive than this shit.
The Enterprise is the fuckin’ flagship of the fleet. It’s crewed by the best of the best. The most skilled in all of starfleet. The cream of the crop. Explain to me why the hell you would staff a ship with top of the line professionals, and then make them beg to be allowed to use the exact skills they were hired for?
Uh, because sometimes, that happens? Uhura wasn’t begging, by the way. Rewatch the scene. Uhura was telling Kirk not to shoot first and to use her skills to see if they could negotiate. And Carol had lied; people were suspicious of her. Honestly, OP is seriously reaching here. But that’s tumblr - every little detail is analysed and even the a rose really is just a rose, to tumblr it’s this almighty sexist/racist/homophobic/transphobic detail that must reflect the true thoughts and feelings of those who wrote the screenplay.
Even in Uhura’s relationship with Spock, it wasn’t about a woman being with a man. It was about a human being with a Vulcan and having to overcome cultural and interracial differences. It wasn’t even about a woman thinking her man wasn’t emotional enough - the human position just happened to have been filled by a woman, but the reverse could have easily happened.
It seems like, to please people, writers have to write one type of real woman. It can’t be varied. It’s gotta be A, B, and C. But the moment they go off the path - a woman being concerned about her relationship specifically - it’s gotta be sexism. Instead of, you know, things that happen in real life.
I didn’t Carol Marcus’s character in this movie anyway. I didn’t care for her in the original but the actress royally bugged me in ST:ID. I felt like her acting was meh, and she was just brought in because they needed someone to connect Ambassador Marcus to Enterprise (which could’ve been a position filled by a man, too, whatever).
The only things sexist about this latest film would be, possibly, Carol’s stripped clothes scene (which is a nod to the fact that Kirk often thinks with his head, not the one on his shoulders) and the fact that there aren’t any other human women (plenty of alien women) that Uhura talks to on Enterprise. Like no female Captains of other things or Admirals or anything like that.
But seriously, every little thing to tumblr is something that means more than it is. If I hold open a door for a woman, it’s benign sexism. If I don’t, it’s because I’m a douchebag.
It’s a lose-lose situation.
Everything he said ^^^
you have to hand it to beth though
i’m constantly predicting when her character will die and she always makes it EVERY TIME
